Do you have what it takes to get with the program?

You are required to take an English test if you are not from an English-speaking country. You can use the Internet to find out where testing is done in your country, and check to see that the tests provided are one of the following: English language testing agencies Paragon Testing Enterprises Inc., University of British Columbia administers the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP).

Note: CELPIP has two tests: “CELPIP-General (CELPIP-G)” and “CELPIP-Academic (CELPIP-A).” Only the CELPIP-General (CELPIP-G) test results are accepted for CIC purposes. Cambridge ESOL, IDP Australia, and the British Council administer the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

Note: IELTS offers “General Training” and “Academic” options. Only the “General Training” test results are accepted for CIC purposes. The English test that you choose will need to have an overall score of at least 5 Once you have proof of your educational background (one certificate is usually sufficient), and a copy of your English test results, you can e-mail those to us with your completed registration form.

After you have sent us your application, please allow at least one week to process it; we will send you an email with our decision about whether or not you have been accepted. If you are accepted to our school, you are then eligible for a Letter of Acceptance. The fee for the Letter of Acceptance (LOA) is $300.00 CDN and is payable to us by credit card or e-transfer. You will need a Letter of Acceptance to apply for your student visa.

The Alberta Health Care Insurance Program is not usually available to students who have student visas of less than 12 month’s duration.

You are strongly encouraged to purchase adequate private health insurance either from an insurance company in your own country before you leave or from a private supplier in Canada.

You will need certain documents to present to the government immigration officials when applying for your work permit. These documents must be in English (or at least clearly understandable to an English speaking person). If your documents are in a language other than English, you will need to have them translated. Some documents are made to be understood regardless of the language spoken. Just use your common sense to determine whether an English speaking person is going to be able to clearly connect the meaning and validity of each of your documents. You should be prepared to provide a police clearance from every country in which you have resided for longer than six months.

It may not be necessary to provide a police clearance for Canada but, if you want to, or if you need fingerprints done for a police clearance from another country, you must go to the Information Check Section of the Edmonton Police at #108, 14315 - 118 Avenue.

You will then fill in the application form and pay $48.00. Sometimes you can get the police clearance immediately; sometimes you will need to wait for up to a week and have it mailed to you. If you need fingerprints they will do them the same day. Note: some people have had to redo their fingerprints causing long delays for them because their first fingerprints were not clear enough. Be sure the police take their time and employ methods like soaking your hands in hot water to enhance the markings so the fingerprints are clear. Using lots of lotion on your hands for the weeks before you go can help. Please be aware that when you apply for your police clearance in Edmonton, you will need your proof of address and your Letter of Acceptance on your person.

Before you can obtain a work permit you must have undergone and passed a medical examination. To do so you must make an appointment to see one of the doctors on the CIC Canada List of Designated Medical Practitioners in Edmonton. It is suggested that you get your Health exam before you come into the country, so that you are permissible to volunteer with children, seniors and disabled people. If this health exam is not obtained, it is possible that your study permit will not authorize you to work in childcare, primary/secondary school teaching, or the health service field occupation.

How can I find a doctor who can provide the medical exam I need to come to Canada?

Only a panel physician authorized by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada can do the immigration medical exam. You can choose a panel physician anywhere in the world. You have to tell him or her where your application will be processed, so that the medical results can be sent to the right office. You will have to pay for the medical exam. The cost can differ from one doctor to another. See the list of panel physicians to find a doctor in your area. You cannot choose your family doctor if his or her name is not on this list.

Your "medical" will cost $400.00. Keep the receipts from all your medical procedures. These will prove that you have done your medical and how long ago you did it when you apply for your work permit. It has been taking anywhere from six weeks to three months for the results of the medical to be imputed into the CIC computer system so it can be accessed by embassy officials. It must be in the system before you will be issued a work permit. Therefore, you should consider making the appointment for your medical at least three months before you hope to be applying for a work permit. The medical result is valid for one year from the date when it was done. It is may be possible to apply for an extension to your medical.

Each province has slightly different qualification requirements for obtaining a driver’s license. Here are the rules for the province of Alberta.

If someone already has a valid Driver's License from their own country, they need to complete both a written and a driving test to get an Alberta Driver's License unless they are from one of the countries that have a reciprocal agreement with Canada.

These countries are: Germany, Japan, the U.S.A., Austria, South Korea, Switzerland, Australia, England, France, Scotland, Wales, Switzerland, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, and Belgium.

People from these countries need only show their current license to get an Alberta license. Nothing else is required. If a person has had a valid license in the past but it has expired, they need to present a letter from their own country written in English stating how long they have driven. They can then proceed as above.

People who cannot meet the above criteria must pass through the Alberta Driver's Program as beginners with all the stipulations and restrictions that beginning Canadian drivers must meet. This includes the fact that you must have another licensed driver in the car with you for the entire first year you drive. You cannot obtain a Canadian driver's license without a student visa or work permit. If you are on a student visa, it needs to be valid for at least ninety days and you need to have proof of enrolment in an educational program.

Canadian residents only need a grade 12 education to enrol.
